M. Judson Booksellers is an independent, stand-alone bookstore on Main Street in downtown Greenville. This bookstore is in a charming old building, with plenty of variety of books, knick-knacks and an in-store cafe. In addition to tea, coffee, hot chocolate, baked goods and other things you might expect at a bookstore cafe, they also sell beer, which is a great thing for any non-bookstore enthusiast companions.

One of the best things about independent bookstores, and M. Judson is no exception, is that their staff typically love books and make Staff Picks, which are clearly indicated with little summaries or notes about what makes each book so great. This gives you a reader’s perspective compared to what you usually get in chain bookstores, which is the books that the publishers decide to promote.
The bookstore is not set up in a rectangular way, and there is so much stock there plus lots of people, that it can be difficult to negotiate the shelves and see everything. But it is worth it. Sprinkled throughout are adorable displays of products and there are even more toward the back of the store next to the children’s section.
The cafe is busy and has only a few tables and a couple of armchairs, but you can take your goodies and continue browsing if you like. It has a laid back vibe, with young staff members who are happy to help.
M. Judson has tons of events which are posted on a large handwritten sheet behind the cashier area including author talks and readings, Open Mic night, where local high schoolers read their creative writing, wine and book discussions, lunch events, Teacher Happy Hour, baking classes and poetry readings.
